All applications must fill out a General Application in addition to sending a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references to each of the host site organizations listed below. LYNN-The mission of Girls Inc. of Lynn is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold by meeting the needs of girls in the community, developing girls’ capacity to overcome the effects of discrimination and be self-sufficient, responsible members of the community, and by serving as a vigorous advocate for all girls. Girls Inc. of Lynn has been operating since 1942, serving girls ages 6-18 emphasizing six core themes: self-reliance & life skills; careers & life planning; leadership & community action; health & sexuality; culture & heritage; sports & adventure. The College Mentoring Fellow will have primary responsibility over all College Access and College Mentoring Programs at Girls Inc. As part of the weekly College Mentoring Program, s/he will facilitate junior and senior mentoring, revise the resource notebooks and Girls Inc. “Lynn College Planning” website with up-to date information while also supporting mentor/mentee relationships. The Fellow will also plan college visits, workshops, answer college related questions from teens and run summer college success workshops. Additionally, the Fellow will create a new Junior college mentoring curriculum that will enhance the programs goals and the skills of girls in the program to better prepare for their senior year of high school. Finally, the Fellow will work with his/her supervisor to regularly assess and evaluate the College Access and Mentoring Programs using pre/post tools, feedback sessions, and observations.

BOSTON-MassCOSH is a nonprofit, membership coalition that organizes and advocates for safe jobs and healthy communities. Based in Dorchester, MassCOSH focuses on immigrants and people of color in the lowest paid and the most unsafe/unhealthy jobs, and engages them in efforts to improve workplace conditions and civic participation to have a voice in policies that govern these conditions. Through a four-tiered approach combining popular education, participatory action research, community organizing, and policy advocacy, MassCOSH engages its constituents directly in the process of identifying and developing strategies to promote improvements in their workplaces and communities. The Fellow at MassCOSH will work specifically on the Teens Lead @ Work program, a youth led education and organizing program in which peer leaders identify environmental hazards and unsafe conditions at work, in school, or in their community and then develop and implement solutions to these issues.

BOSTON-The mission of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Center for Community Health Improvement (CCHI) is to collaborate with community and hospital partners to build and sustain healthier communities and to enhance the hospital’s responsiveness to patients and community members from diverse backgrounds. Over the past 19 years, the CCHI has worked with community partners in Chelsea, Revere, Charlestown, and Boston to assess needs and create more than 35 programs that prevent and reduce substance abuse and violence, increase access to care for vulnerable populations, eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health care and provide opportunities for Boston youth. Building upon MGH Youth Scholar College Prep Initiative, the Fellow will expand program offerings and continue to facilitate the college readiness program for 9th and 10th grade scholars. The initiative’s goal is to ensure that MGH Youth Scholars are motivated and compelled to complete high school and matriculate and graduate from institutions of higher education.

BOSTON-MathPOWER is dedicated to taking a comprehensive approach to developing both proficiency in advanced mathematics and personal resiliency as vehicles to bring about transformational change in the lives of urban youth. MathPOWER is committed to helping students succeed in math as well as launching students on successful paths to pursue and complete post-secondary education. We envision a world in which all students achieve competency in advanced mathematics which serves as a gateway to lifelong learning and a productive career. The Fellow will expand the current Math*STARS/Yawkey Afterschool and Youth Advisory Board (YAB) programming by holding a leadership/youth voice event with the other Math*STARS sites. He/She will learn the best practices and lessons learned about the current YAB-led events in order to support youth in planning YAB events at other Math*STARS sites.

BOSTON-Youth Enrichment Services’ (YES) mission is to inspire and challenge youth with physical and mental activities that foster life-long respect for self, others, and the environment. Over 1,500 Boston youth participate in YES annually. They benefit from a continuum of outdoor sports programs and youth development leadership activities that include career programming, college planning, and community service. The Fellow will establish YES’s new College Preparation Program serving an additional 35 new youth with career workshops, college planning workshops, one-on-one advising, college tours,  and life and study skills workshops. The Fellow will work with the YES Academy Director to measure program impact on youth.

BOSTON-ZUMIX is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to building community through the arts. Our mission is empowered youth who use music to make strong positive change in their lives, their communities, and the world. As the only youth arts organization in East Boston, a geographically isolated working-class community, ZUMIX provides top-quality music and cultural programming as an alternative way for young people to deal with frustration, anger, and fear, and as a method of building cultural understanding and acceptance in a community which has had the largest demographic shift of any Boston neighborhood over the past twenty years. A Fellow/Pathways Coordinator will help ZUMIX provide increased opportunities for our youth both as program participants and as young adults as they make decisions regarding their educational and career paths. The Fellow will work with ZUMIX staff, youth, and recent alumni to assess current needs and opportunities, and identify where and how ZUMIX can increase its support of our youth and alumni in terms of pursuing higher education and careers. The Fellow will make a significant contribution toward ZUMIX’s goals surrounding our commitment to deepening youth engagement in our programs and providing increased academic and vocational support for our youth and alumni.
